Mission Statement
Civic Music Association of Milwaukee provides and supports music education and performance opportunities for young musicians in the greater Milwaukee area. Civic Music Association of Milwaukee (CMA) has nurtured musical life in our community since 1918. CMA currently presents programs tailored for elementary school, middle school, high school and college students, in addition to young professionals. Performances, awards programs for the recognition of excellence, scholarships, and coaching sessions are some of the services provided by CMA to help young musicians realize their talents and dreams.
About CMA
As one of Milwaukee’s oldest arts organizations, Civic Music Association of Milwaukee (CMA) has been active in developing the musical life of our community since 1918. Our mission is to provide music education and performance opportunities to young musicians in the greater Milwaukee area. Participating instrumentalists and vocalists take part in a variety of unique opportunities to refine their skills and practice their craft through private lessons, auditions, workshops, competition, and performance. Last year, CMA reached over 1,000 young musicians in our community. More than 90% of our programming involves students 18 years old or younger.
The value of arts education in promoting high achievement in all academic areas is well documented, but the need for serious music students to develop their skills through live performance before an audience, and to gain poise through solo audition and competition is often overlooked. CMA encourages talented young musicians to pursue the next level of a musical career by providing unique performance opportunities and recognition of their accomplishments at a critical time in their growth and development. Through our High School Showcase and High School Awards programs, high school students receive this further training, support, and recognition.
Our Artist and Ensemble Recital Series has provided audiences with high quality programs at affordable prices for over 80 years, and supports the concept that a musician’s work is to perform by giving local young professionals a showcase for their talents. Now in its ninth season, CMA’s Vocal Coaching Program provides world-class vocal coaching and performance opportunities to Milwaukee area singers. No other Milwaukee organization supports these young vocalists and instrumentalists in quite the same way.
CMA is managed by an extraordinary volunteer board made up of professional musicians, music teachers, arts administrators and management professionals. The Program Committee monitors CMA’s programs closely through written evaluations and surveys to determine future improvements. To encourage student participation in music, CMA works closely with the Milwaukee Public Schools, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music.
